Review Process

AIJ uses an Open Review process in which both reviewers and authors are aware of each other’s identities. This model encourages transparent dialogue, constructive feedback, and potential collaboration among scholars in the African Diaspora’s intellectual communities.

Review Process Steps:

  • Initial Screening: The Editor-in-Chief reviews submissions for relevance, proofreading, originality, and adherence to submission guidelines.
  • Reviewer Assignment: Two qualified reviewers from the editorial board or expert network are assigned.
  • Open Review Exchange:
  1. Reviewers provide written feedback within 3–5 weeks.
  2. Authors and reviewers are free (but not required) to initiate direct communication for clarification or scholarly engagement.
  • Revision and Resubmission:
  1. Authors revise based on feedback and resubmit with a response letter.
  2. Final acceptance is based on the editor’s and reviewers’ recommendations.
  • Publication: Accepted papers are copyedited, proofread, and published online in open-access format.

Collaboration Culture

AIJ views the review process as a potential site for intellectual exchange and mentorship. Reviewers are encouraged to approach the process in a spirit of collegiality, and authors are welcome to build scholarly relationships with their reviewers where appropriate.
